What Obelisk collects, why, and what you can do about it.
The short version
Obelisk needs your location to work. An experience is a set of real places, and the app has to know when you reach one. Location is used on your device to trigger content, and is not sold, shared with advertisers, or used to build a profile of you.
You can stop at any time by leaving the experience or turning off location access for the site in your browser.
This notice covers independently shared free experiences and the creator workspace. Paid customer accounts, purchases and shared progress are covered by the customer privacy notice at customer privacy notice.
What is collected when you play
Precise location. While an experience is open, the app reads your GPS position to work out which zones you are near. This is processed as you move and is not stored as a continuous track of where you went.
Play records. Which experience you opened, which zones you reached, and when. These are kept so creators can see how their experience is being used. Free play does not require an account; these play records are associated with a random player-session reference rather than your name or email.
Progress on your own device. Items collected, zones unlocked, and passphrases solved are stored in your browser, not on our servers. Clearing your browser data clears them.
Messages to AI characters. If an experience includes a character you can talk to, your messages and relevant conversation history are sent to an AI provider to generate a reply. Obelisk-provided character chat uses Anthropic Claude; another creator may use Google Gemini with their own key. Do not type anything private into a character conversation.
Camera. If an experience offers a camera view, the image is used on your device to draw the scene. Camera images are not uploaded or stored.
Optional reviews. If you send a review, Obelisk stores your star rating, optional comment, experience and content-version reference, and submission time. Free reviews are associated with a random play/review reference; paid reviews are associated with the signed-in player and outing. Reviews are currently private to authorized Obelisk administrators and are not displayed publicly. Review drafts and save status may also be kept in your browser. Please leave names and personal details out of your review.
What is collected when you create
Your email address, used to sign in. There is no password.
The experiences you build: text, audio, images, coordinates, and settings.
AI provider keys you choose to add. These are stored so your experiences can run, and are used only for that.
Basic usage counts (storage used, experiences created, AI calls made) to enforce account limits.
Who else is involved
Obelisk runs on services that necessarily handle some of this data: Supabase (database, sign-in, file storage), Vercel (hosting), and map providers including CARTO, Esri and OpenStreetMap services. Obelisk-provided character text is processed by Anthropic (Claude). Creator tools use Google (Gemini) for content generation and review; another creator’s Google key may also power their character chat. ElevenLabs processes text when a creator generates stored voice audio. Playing a stored audio file does not generate new speech.
These providers process data to deliver the service. Obelisk does not sell personal information to anyone, and does not share it for advertising.
How long things are kept
Experiences and uploaded files are generally kept while your account or published experiences remain in use. When deletion is requested, we review the relevant content, stored copies and effects on continuing or shared access.
Free play records use a random player-session reference rather than your name or email. They are kept to understand and improve experiences and are reviewed for their continuing purpose.
Reviews are retained to understand and improve experiences. You can ask about a review or request its deletion using the contact below; we may need the experience and submission details to locate a free review.
Retention is reviewed according to the record’s purpose. We may retain the minimum information needed for an unresolved request, a safety or security concern, a dispute, or accounting, tax or original agreement evidence. Shared information and other people’s records are considered separately.
Your choices
Location access can be refused or revoked in your browser at any time. Experiences will not work without it, since the whole point is where you are standing.
To request access, correction or deletion of information about you, email hello@obelisk.place. We verify and handle requests manually. We explain any information needed to locate your records, the effect of the proposed action, and any specific records that must be retained for a continuing purpose.
Children
Obelisk is not intended for anyone under 13. That applies to playing an experience as well as making one, and accounts should not be created by them.
We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If we learn that we have, we delete it. Contact hello@obelisk.place to report a concern.
Experiences involve walking to real places. Anyone under 18 should be doing that with a parent or guardian who agrees to it.
